The Giver - Book Covers
Created and designed three potential book covers for the classic novel “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. The objective of the covers was to effectively communicate the author’s message using typography, physical materials, or a specific design style.
About the book: A beautiful, provocative story of a boy who questions values and experiences we often take for granted and examines his deeply held beliefs. In so doing he experiences something incredible and attempts the impossible.

This typographic book cover uses typography and an apple in a creative and conceptual way to draw the viewer attention. The simple, bold shapes and colors create strong focal point. The apple shape and texture symbolize the significant role the apple plays in the story.
This handmade book cover uses physical materials to illustrate the difference between Jonas’s world and the one he longs for. The contrast between the flat looking gray hands and the three-dimensional red apple represents these two worlds.
The book uses a change of context or environment to represent the message of the book in a creative way. The gray water represents Jonas’s world, while the colored forest with the creek represents the world Jonas wishes to be a part of. The hand symbolizes how trapped Jonas feels in his world, and his longing for a different one.
